St. Mary's Hospital has a spirit of caring and collaboration with its entire staff that enables it to provide exceptional services delivered with compassion and clinical excellence.
Founded in 1878 by three Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, St. Mary's Hospital is a 355-bed, all-private-room health care facility that combines modern technology with the caring tradition of the original founders. Situated on an attractive 21-acre campus overlooking Lake Decatur, they offer a broad spectrum of comprehensive health services, including the latest diagnostic equipment, interventional cardiology, surgical and medical intervention, emergency medical care, outpatient radiation therapy, pain management and a sleep center. St. Mary’s is the site of a unique intergenerational day services program and is the community's only hospital-based provider of behavioral health services.
Recently St. Mary’s has built a new Emergency Department that provides for a great work environment. The new emergency department was designed to maximize efficiency and response times, while offering greater comfort and privacy for patients and their loved ones. The emergency department's capacity for more than 44,000 patients per year is an increase of 25% over the previous design. The lower level of the emergency department is also home to our new clinical laboratory, expanding our laboratory capabilities and increasing our ability to perform laboratory work with speed and efficiency.
St. Mary’s is located about 40 minutes from Springfield, the capital of Illinois. Overlooking beautiful Lake Decatur, the hospital is in the process of a massive modernization and renovation including a new emergency department that will be designed to maximize efficiency as well as provide increased comfort and privacy for patients.
Decatur offers numerous activities. Whether it is the outdoors, shopping or the arts there truly is something for everyone. In addition to the great quality of living, the school systems boast world class educational opportunities in both their private and public schools.
Choosing to live in Decatur is an easy choice to make both in terms of quality of life offered and the value of local housing. The city represents the rare combination of low cost of living and high quality housing which makes taking up residence in the city an attractive choice both for long term residents and those who might be looking to make Central Illinois their home for the first time.
Whether you’re in the mood for the great outdoors, want to shop ‘til you drop or prefer your entertainment on the big screen or stage, Decatur has something just for you. Today, we offer more than 2,000 acres of parks and recreational areas and host more than 130 festivals and other entertainment events including the Lakeside Music and Arts Festival, the Decatur Celebration, Illinois’ largest free family street festival and the event billed as the “Super Bowl” of agricultural exhibitions — The Farm Progress Show.
Downtown Decatur is quickly becoming a destination in and of itself, a 24-hour living environment where residents and visitors can bask in a buzz the likes of which cities across the country only wish they had. Today the multimillion-dollar renovation of the Lincoln Square Theater is nearing completion while the revitalized Avon Theater and Avon Twins are an important part of ongoing efforts to create a downtown hub of residential, entertainment, business and dining options for both residents and visitors alike. Construction is well underway on a new 75,000 square foot mixed use building downtown that will surely serve as a much-needed anchor for the ongoing rebirth of our central business district.
Decatur’s primary and secondary educational institutions continue to provide world class educational opportunities for students from across the globe, mixing an emphasis on providing the basics with exposure to disciplines that rest on the cutting edge of educational opportunity. In the Decatur Public Schools, new superintendent Gloria Davis has infused a new sense of focus on speaking with “One Voice” for district children while adding an emphasis on providing a more rigorous curriculum necessary to success in today’s society. Still a bevy of local private schools also provide opportunities for students in the community while our award-winning secondary institutions — Millikin University and Richland Community College — are a top choice for students, combining first rate education at a value unseen in other areas of the country.
