An iconic, affluent resort destination, Martha’s Vineyard is home for more than 15,000 year-round residents living in six quaint towns. These are picturesque villages, with classic Main Streets and storybook downtowns featuring stately New England-style homes and interesting shops, sometimes on brick and cobblestone streets. Scenic harbors bob with fishing vessels, sailboats and mini yachts, and all types of crafts are tied up in the many little marinas. In warm weather, the island’s population swells to over 100,000. Summer visitors often rent motorized bikes to zip around in an atmosphere that resembles Boston, but without the high-rise buildings!
Famous as the location where Jaws was filmed, Martha’s Vineyard comprises 100 square miles – making it the third largest island off the east coast. Located 7 miles south of Cape Cod, The Vineyard is easy to reach via ferry from several Massachusetts ports – plus longer distance ferries departing from Rhode Island and even Manhattan, during summer weekends. The island’s airport offers flights throughout the year with regular service to Boston, Providence and elsewhere – while seasonal flights connect residents and visitors to New York, Philadelphia and DC. A smaller air strip with grass runways is favored by private pilots.
Recreation here naturally centers on boating, with sailing extremely popular. Martha’s Vineyard also features many beautiful beaches, helping this peaceful island appeal to artists and celebrities for generations. Unique cuisine ranges from local seafood to international fare, offered in each town on the island. Local shopping will accommodate virtually every need, while eclectic local shops offering fashion, original art and antiques.
Enjoy the best of coastal living with excellent schools in your choice of safe, family-friendly communities.
