Providence was founded in 1636, making it one of the oldest cities in the USA. Today, Providence has a metro area of 1.6 million extending into southern Massachusetts. Known as “the Creative Capital” you will find a thriving arts community and a wealth of educational resources. This is the home of Brown University, Johnson & Wales (school for the culinary arts), and the Rhode Island School of Design, with a remarkable art museum holding one of the largest collections in the country. Younger students may choose between several excellent private schools and a very strong public school system.
As one of the busiest deep water ports on the east coast, Providence has thriving industries, and many cultural and recreational distractions too, such as the peaceful Waterplace Park, a modern skating center, a park with a zoo and a botanical center, and a superb Museum of Natural History and Planetarium. Recreational opportunities are all around – with hiking and biking very popular, and of course all types of boating. Providence offers a range of affordable home settings from new condos in the revitalized downtown to welcoming neighborhoods in numerous suburbs – and country acreage not far beyond. Sports fans will love the proximity to nearby Foxboro, MA – home of New England Patriots football – only 15 minutes away.
In 45 minutes, you can drive to Boston for the theatre, ballet or a Red Sox or Celtics game… to Cape Cod for a peaceful day of fishing or sailing or antiquing…. or to Newport RI to tour the famous mansions, or enjoy a beautiful beach. New York City is within reach too, 3 hours away.
