The WJB Dorn VA Medical Center located in Columbia, SC is seeking a board certified or board eligible Orthopedic Surgeon to work in the Surgery Service. 

The Orthopedic Surgeon/Physician is accountable to the Chief, Surgical Service, for assuring the most effective delivery of care in Orthopedic Surgery Section while meeting and exceeding compliance standards. The Orthopedic surgeon participates in and/or manages all aspects of a general orthopedic surgery, to include inpatient and outpatient clinical components.

The Orthopedic surgeon manages patient care workload within available staffing, which may include fee basis physicians, contracted physicians and physician assistants. The Orthopedic physician works effectively with Surgical Service administrative staff, Anesthesiology, Operating and Recovery Room staff. The Orthopedic physician performs the administrative components of patient care management, such as: provides dictation of progress notes, OP reports, discharge summaries, signatures, and consultation referrals for inpatients and outpatients, etc.

The Orthopedic physician provides surgical treatment for patients with musculoskeletal injuries and diseases, including adult major joint reconstructive services. The Orthopedists supervises and trains physician assistants if applicable. The Orthopedic physician must possess computer skills to access and input typed data on each patient into the computerized patient record system (CPRS). The Orthopedists performs other directly related duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications:   Applicant preferably will have experience in providing treatment or consultative services, joint replacement, hand surgery, foot and ankle orthopedics, etc.

Work Hours:   0800-1630

Call Requirements (Frequency and nature):   Orthopedic call backs- Emergency/Rotated every 3-4 weeks

Department Staffing (Healthcare Providers):   2 Surgeons, 1 Part Time Physician, 2 Physician Assistants

Work Volume: (Number of patients seen per day, ratio of clinic to admin time, etc.): Clinic held 2.5 days a week- average number of patients seen per day ranges between 12-16, admin time averages 2-4 hours per pay period (varies)

Scope of Leadership Responsibilities (Number of personnel directly supervised):   None at this time unless placed in acting position in the absence of Section Chief.

Salary Range: $275,000-$300,000 per year

 A recruitment/relocation incentive is approved for 15% of salary over 3 years




In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following basic requirements:

Language Requirement: Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
